Pelvic Floor Problems

What is pelvic floor dysfuntion?

The pelvic floor includes muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue that support pelvic organs (such as the uterus, bladder, and rectum). As we age, our pelvic floor weakens, often leading to pelvic floor dysfunction.

Why it weakens

Many things can cause your pelvic floor to weaken, including pregnancy, large babies, multiple deliveries, surgery, or even chronic cough.

Symptoms of pelvic floor problems

The most common forms of pelvic floor dysfunction are urinary or fecal incontinence or vaginal prolapse . You may experience pelvic pain or pain during sexual intercourse in addition to your incontinence issues.

Treatment options

Depending on the cause of your pelvic floor problems, your Women’s Care physician may recommend a combination of treatment methods, from dietary changes to medications to surgery. Women’s Care also provides pelvic floor muscle training .
